Marked in history

Posted on 21 July 2010

Although not officially created until December 1823, significant places, events, and people dating back to the 1500s have played a huge part in history of Decatur County. On the following pages, every historical marker in Decatur County is pictured. These markers, located in every corner of the county, highlight many historical figures such as Hernando de Soto, Andrew Jackson, and Stephen Decatur.

Decatur County’s industrial history is deep as indicated by signs marking the early farming of tobacco, the mining of Attapulgite, the manufacture of Confederate soldier uniforms, and the harvesting of lumber and turpentine from vast forestlands.

The messages, memorials, and stories included on these markers remind us of the bravery, ingenuity, and ability of the people who paved the way and built the buildings to what we now know as Decatur County.

I was especially touched when I read HUTTO SCHOOL because of the history that it revealed and because it was an indication that somebody is trying to “get it right” and being more inclusive from a historical perspective. Thank you
