Under the Bearcats’ sky

During a pep rally held Aug. 31 in Willis Park, a sizable crowd enjoyed games, cheers and camaraderie in preparation of Friday night’s Bainbridge High School game against its long-time rival, the Cairo High School Syrupmakers.

The rivalry between the Bearcats and Syrupmakers dates back to 1922, and Cairo leads the series with 30 wins to Bainbridge’s 26. There have been eight ties, and one game was never played, which was two years ago, in 2008, because of a tropical storm.

In the 2010 game, Cairo beat Bainbridge 14-0 at Centennial Field. Bainbridge is 4-5 against Cairo since 2000.

Cairo were Class AAA state champions in 1990, under former Bainbridge head coach Ralph Jones, and were state champions again in 2008 under the leadership of Tom Fallaw. Jones also led Bainbridge to its only state championship in 1982.
