Bainbridge Country Club, established in 1921 and located at 312 Country Club Road, has been serving the residents of Bainbridge and Decatur County for more than 90 years.

Club pro Jimmy Stevens describes the course as challenging.

“We invite our new members to embrace the challenge of our 18-hole golf course,” Stevens said.

George Herring, who was the country club pro for 27 years, beginning in 1960, remembers the days when the club had only a nine-hole course.

“In 1960, we purchased the land, on which the front nine holes are now located, from the late Gil Pirrung for $100.” Herring said. “Mr. Pirrung let us have the land for $1 a year for 100 years.”

Stevens said that, while the 6,400-yard par-72, 18-hole golf course is the heart of the club, it’s not just the golf that makes it so family oriented.

“We have a driving range, a well-stocked pro shop, and an Olympic-size swimming pool with a separate toddler pool,” he said. “In addition, we have a club house with full service dining and catering and a ballroom with a separate kitchen area. We also have a pool house for pool-side entertaining, and a full service lounge and bar.”

Stevens and his staff also host numerous children’s and youth activities during the year.

They include an Easter Egg Hunt, a July 4 pool party and cookout, a back-to-school luau in August, youth golf clinic and etiquette classes in June, a Halloween party in October, a pig-n-jig hayride in November, breakfast with Santa in December and football season tailgate cookouts in September.

“We also rent the ballroom out to various local groups,” Stevens said. “The hospital gala was held here for several years.”

The club hosts numerous tournaments during the year. The Port City Open is in March, and the Member Guest Tournament is in May.

There is also a July 4 Flag Tournament and Pool Party, an August Member Tournament, a September Labor Day Weekend Scramble, an October Club Championship and a November Fall Classic.

“We reserve the right to postpone or reschedule events in order to ensure the best possible experience for members and guests,” Stevens said. “Golf course rates and other fees of Bainbridge Country Club are subject to change. Golfers should call for current rates, schedule of events and tee times.”
